10 common Rummy 45 mistakes
Most lost rounds in Rummy 45 aren't bad luck — they come from a handful of mistakes that keep repeating. Here are the most common ones, and what to do instead.
Your first meld
- Waiting too long to open. You have 45 points but keep "collecting" for a nicer meld. Meanwhile someone goes out and you lose everything in your hand. When you have 45, meld.
- Breaking a good meld to reach 45. You split a nearly finished run for a few points. Better keep big melds and wait a turn.
- Forgetting the big tiles. 10–13 are worth twice as much as 2–9. A set of 12s or 13s gets you close to 45.
Discards
- Discarding exactly what the next player needs. Check what the player after you took and melded before you discard.
- Ignoring the discard row. It tells you what can't come any more and what the others don't need. It's the best source of information in the game.
- Taking the discard without a plan. The tile you take must be used in the same turn. If you have nowhere to put it, leave it.
Joker, Atu and the endgame
- Using the joker too early. A joker placed in any meld can be taken by someone else. Sometimes it's worth keeping for your last meld or for going out with a joker, which doubles your points.
- Not tracking the Atu. The tile identical to the Atu gives a 50-point bonus. If you have it, plan to meld it.
- Holding big tiles at the end. When someone is close to going out, discard your big tiles and Aces first.
- Breaking from below without counting. Breaking from below gives you every tile discarded after the one you pick. If you can't use them, you fill your hand with points against you.
How to fix them
Play a few games against the computer. In the game, the "Hint" button shows what a good player would do, and at the end of a round "See how they went out" replays the winner's moves step by step. For more tips, read our Rummy 45 strategy.
Frequently asked questions
What is the biggest mistake in Rummy 45?
Waiting too long for your first meld. If someone goes out, every tile left in your hand is lost.
When should I keep the joker?
When you are close to going out: going out with a joker doubles your round points, and a joker melded too early can be taken by another player.
What should I discard when someone is about to go out?
Discard your big tiles (10–13) and Aces first, so you lose as few points as possible if they go out.
