Rummy 45 strategy: 12 tips

Luck only decides the deal. After that, the winner is whoever plans melds, watches the table and knows when to take a risk.

Before your first meld

Count from turn one. Tiles 2–9 are worth 5 points, 10–13 are worth 10. You need at least 45 points with at least one run and one set.
Aim for high tiles. A set of 12s is worth 30 points; a set of 3s only 15.
Use the joker early. It completes exactly the meld you are missing for the first meld.
Don't wait too long. If someone goes out before you have melded, you lose 100 points.

Throw dead tiles first — tiles that can no longer complete any run or set.
Don't feed the next player. Watch what they pick up and avoid discarding neighbours of it.
After melding, dump high tiles, so you lose fewer points if someone else goes out.

Watch the trump tile (Atu). Melding the exact trump tile earns extra points; an Ace or joker trump doubles the whole round.
Take jokers from the table by replacing them with the real tile — then use the joker in a new meld right away.
Take from below wisely: only when the chosen tile makes a strong new meld and the rest fits your hand.

How do you reach 45 points quickly?

Keep melds with high tiles (10–13 are worth 10 each) and use the joker to complete the run or set you are missing.

Which tiles should I discard?

First the tiles that can no longer form any meld, then high tiles, so you lose fewer points if someone goes out.
