Two-player Rummy 45
Rummy 45 works just as well with two players as with four: same tiles, same rules, a different rhythm. With a single opponent every discarded tile tells you more, and the pile lasts longer.
What stays the same
The rules don't change: 106 tiles, the first player gets 15 tiles and the other 14, the Atu tile is turned face up and your first meld needs at least 45 points. Melds are the same — runs of one colour and sets of three or four of the same number. You can read the full rules any time.
What changes with two players
- More tiles stay in the pile. Only 29 tiles are dealt, so rounds last longer and you have time to build your melds.
- Discards matter twice as much. Every tile your opponent throws away tells you what they don't need, and the tile you discard is the only one they can take.
- The Atu is easier to track. With two players you know exactly who might hold the tile identical to the Atu.
- It's more tactical. No third player will discard the exact tile you need — it's all between you and your opponent.
Tips for heads-up play
- Don't feed their melds. Before you discard, look at what your opponent took and melded. Avoid giving them the neighbour of a run.
- Open as soon as you have 45. With two players your opponent can go out quickly after their first meld, and tiles left in your hand cost you.
- Keep the joker for the end. Longer rounds mean the joker can complete your last meld — and going out with a joker doubles your points.
- Count the big tiles. If your opponent still holds many tiles, discard your 10–13s and Aces first so you lose less if they go out.
